What do you eat after weight loss surgery?

August 20, 2008 · Filed Under Weight Loss · 2 Comments

I'm considering weight loss surgery. What does one eat after a surgery? Could I just follow the same diet (without the surgery) and get the same results?

If you are considering the surgery, why are you asking if you can get the same results following the same diet? Surgery is the last option for those who are seriously overweight, and ALL other methods have failed. It sounds like you want to try and change your diet, which is good. If you have not tried diet and exercise, then you should. This surgery is dangerous, and full of risks.
Spend the time exercising and eating healthy food. It took a long time for you to put on the weight, so it is going to take a long time to take it off. Just be patient and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
They give you very strict instructions about what you can, and cannot eat after surgery. For instance, you cannot drink and eat at the same time. You cannot eat anything that contains huge amounts of sugar, or fat. At first you are limited to a liquid diet, then you are allowed things like jello, or other soft foods.
You must also consider the consequences of having this type of surgery done, not just short term, but think long term, in the future. The majority of people who have this surgery do have some sort of complications, and they do gain a lot of the weight back. If you have not addressed the emotional aspect of why you overeat, this is probably not the best option for you.
Weigh your options carefully, and make a VERY educated decision. Speak with many people who have had this done. Ask them all kinds of ?'s. I know many people who have had this done, and sure it gives you the results you want very quickly, but for what they have gone through, it isn't close to being worth it. Good luck.

What is the best way to avoid saggy skin during a weight loss regiment?

August 19, 2008 · Filed Under Weight Loss · 10 Comments

I'm 29, I'm 5'2''. In the past 2.5 weeks i have lost 11 pounds and now weigh 205. I have already noticed a little skin sag.
I reviewed the other questions on this topic. I want to know if it is necessary to stick to the regiment of 2 pounds max per week for weight loss or it's alright to lose more if you're doing higher intensity exercises like swimming, running, bicycling.
I've been losing weight so fast b/c i've cut down on how much food i've been eating, working out multiple times a day and cutting down on sleep ( i was sleeping too much previously).
would collagen in skin spring back faster if i lose weight at the slower rate of 2 lbs per week?
even if i lose weight faster than the 2 lbs, and lose weight at the 1 lb/ day as i am now, will my skin shrink to normal eventually? (i hope to lose at least 70 more lbs) i'm willing to lose weight 2lb/wk. i gained this weight of 65 pounds over the past year. i haven't had it for very long. is my skin resilient? be honest.

It really doesn't matter how big you get (as long as you are not grossly overweight). What matters is how healthy your skin is, and the skin type you were born with.

The Vitamins that directly affect skin health are…

Making sure you are taking these daily along with lots of water for hydration is VITAL to help your skin repair itself.

If you can stand to do it, you should replace EVERY FLUID in your diet with water–but make sure you don't drink too much. You need to keep your skin hydrated, but you can make yourself sick if you drink TOO much.

How do you know the best form of weight loss for yourself versus others?

August 17, 2008 · Filed Under Weight Loss · 4 Comments

I am 31 years old. I have two kids and have gained excessive weight after both of them. I had a cessarian with the first and natural with the second. I'm pear shaped so it's mostly in my hips and buttocks. I have a desk job so I sit a lot and I'm always too tired feeling to work out at night. I've been on every diet under the sun to only gain it all back. I've tried numerous excersises also. Over the counter weight loss pills or energy pills give me a racing heart. When I do loose weight I get the saggy belly that hangs between the legs when I sit and bend so how would I be able to find out how would be the best way to loose weight effectivly for myself and my body type and keep the sagging away. Please help.

ok, first….stay away from the 'diet pills' — they are ALL CRAP, EVERY ONE OF THEM.
they all say, 'use with ANY sensible diet and exercise program'…and the reason for this is that it is the sensible diet and exercise programs that are responsible for the weight loss, not the stupid pills.

as for sensible diet part — and i'm not being funny here (it's what works) stop eating so much. most of us have 2 double whoppers with cheese, or super size our meals etc. Just stop eating as much — 2 hot dogs instead of four, 1 whopper instead of 2, reduce calories gradually but noticeable. After a week or so, start throwing in the baked potato or salad instead of fries etc.
Just start eating less and less, then start eating healthier. Find good healthy things you can eat a lot of. And don't worry about the 'fat pig' comments or looks — don't do it because of that, do it for your other reasons — your life — you're only 31 and have to live long and healthy to take care of your kids.

Work in the exercise program in whatever form you can — walk more (stairs instead of elevators, park a little further away and work), take walks with kids, pets, start doing floor exercises, plays sports with kids etc. You don't have to join a gym or do 5 hrs of fitness a day — just more than you are now.

GOOD LUCK — eat less, eat healthy, start exercising, and exercise more.

Confusion about weight loss? How is it possible to have permanent weight loss if dieting slows down metabolism

August 16, 2008 · Filed Under Weight Loss · 1 Comment

well, i know that eating less will have the body adjust to the new calorie intake and thus, no further weight loss. So how is it possible to have permanent weight loss if eating less doesn't work?

Please give tips and suggestions, people who have sucessfully lost weight. thanks soo much!

The trick of losing weight is to fool your metabolism into thinking it is getting fed normally. If you try to lose weight by starving yourself, then your metabolism kicks in to low gear and hangs on to every scrap you feed yourself, making weight-loss impossible.Plus, after you have managed to starve yourself and not die,the minute you start eating again, your body sucks up every calorie it gets, and you pack the weight back on.
If you want to lose weight, which is a very difficult thing to do,you have to eat proper food:grains;veggies;low-fat meat./fish;drink plenty of water;and do some exercise. It sounds very simple, but it is very hard to do when you are de-toxing your body from fats and sugars.
Ask your doctor for an appropriate food plan for you.Don't use or think of the word"diet." It only serves to defeat you because it implies deprivation. And as humans,we do not like to be deprived of anything.
I might also suggest that you join a weight-loss group, like Overeaters Anonymous,or better still,a group like Weight Watchers.it is easier to lose weight if you are partnered with people who have the same goal as you.
Good luck to you,and eat healthy!!
PS:If you are a young person and need to lose weight:Start now because with every year,it becomes more and more difficult to lose weight and keep it off.Take the word of an old geezer.I know whereof I speak, sadly.

What weight loss supplements would you suggest?

I've decided to lose about 50 lbs by the time the summer is over and so far I'm making great progress. I started my diet a little over a month ago and have already lost 14 lbs. I joined the gym. I go at least 4 times a week. Usually every day though unless another plan interrupts my schedule. I am watching what I eat. I have cut my calories significantly and even started keeping a food diary, in which i also keep track of my exercise. I bought a pedometer and count me steps, basically I've improved my way tremendously since the year started. My question now is in regards to those infamous "weight loss pills". I would like to add something to increase my energy, boost my metabolism, and just speed up the process. I am kind of in a hurry because I am planning a vacation and would like to possibly complete this before my initial plan. But how can you trust anything out there, really? Has anyone taken anything that they were satisfied with? Or does anybody have any tips in general?
I tried the Slimquick, I even tried TrimSpa, but stopped taking them soon after. Trimspa still sits in my closet i took like 4 of them. Slimquick i used a whole bottle of, bought another one, went through half and then stopped because i wasn't sure if they would interact with medications that i started taking at the time. I can say i was pretty satisfied with the results slimquick gave me. Still I would like to see what other options I have. The cost is also a concern, simply because I'm not rich and can't afford to spend $100/month on weight loss pills. A friend of mine [body builder] swears by Hydroxycut. But not many other people I talked to recommended it, so any suggestions?

DO NOT TAKE DIET PILLS! They are dangerous!!

Last year I was visiting my parents and took diet pills on top on my exercise routine and normal diet. I was 26 at the time, 5'11, 180 lbs. By week three I was sick. I had diarrhea, dry heaves, dizziness, headaches, and a general feeling of being sick. I thought I had caught the flu or something. I had lost 13 lbs in 4 days. One morning I told my mom I didn't feel good. My vision kept blacking out and I felt (for lack of a better way to say it) stoned. Later that afternoon I was walking from the bathroom to my bedroom (a 5 foot walk) and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital emergency where they did a bunch of tests on me.

My pulse was up to 120, My blood pressure was 150/40, they had to start me on an IV, the did an EKG on me, took blood and urine samples, and a whole barrage of other tests.

They finally got me stabilized and said that I was dehydrated and malnutritioned. I told him that I took diet pills. When I mentioned diet pill, the doctors face lit up and said that's why. He said they can cause a whole bunch of health problems, including death. He told me to toss the diet pills or next time I might not be so lucky.

I was kept in the hospital for almost 10 hours, given 3 or 4 IVs, potassium, juices, and monitored (by the EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate machines) every 15 minutes.

Please take my story as a warning. If you seriously want to loose weight there are better ways (I know because I've lost weight after this)

The quickest way is to cut out red meats, starches, breads, sugars, alcohol, and sodas.

Eat veggies (salads are good), soups, and drink TONS of water. If you get hungry between a meal, drink water to fill up.

In moderation eat white meats, and fruits (fruits contain natural sugars, and that can put on weight)

Practice portion control. Yes, you'll feel hungry at first, but think of your goal, and soon your stomach will start shrinking and you won't have that feeling anymore.

Eat 5 times a day. A small breakfast. A mid-morning snack, such as an apple. A small lunch. A mid-afternoon snack, such as carrots. A lite dinner. Do not eat any later than 7pm (6pm is better.)

Go exercise for at least an hour a day, incorporating weight training. Weight training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat. You get the idea. It also gives tone and definition. Also do a few yoga and pilates exercises to help tone those hard to reach and stubborn areas.
