So How Exactly Do I Eat Healthier?

October 13, 2008 · Filed Under Eating Healthy · Comment

It’s one thing to say that you’re going to eat healthier and quite another to actually do it. And of course it begs the question “healthier than what?” We need a base line or starting point so that we can gauge what is healthier eating. Where are you now in some kind of measurement of how healthy you are eating? What measurement tool are we using? A caloric measurement? A measure of number of nutrients we take in? Or, are we asking a person to follow guidelines for healthy eating set forth by the USDA?

The definition of healthy eating may well be different for different people. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, healthy eating is defined as “eating the recommended types and amounts of foods, nutrients and calories that are recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, while limiting low-nutrient, high-fat and high-sugar foods and beverages that will promote health and achieve and maintain an optimum body weight and energy balance.”

Included amongst the benefits of eating healthier are improving your overall health and improving your well-being. You will feel better and have more energy. A healthier diet helps you to stay fit and active and can also help to fight stress in your life.

Healthier eating includes eating smarter. Here are a few ways to eat smarter:

Take smaller bites of food and chew the food for longer time periods because as we chew food, saliva mixes in which is the first step in digestion. Chewing our food slower and for longer periods of time not only is better for digestion but we taste it longer, which lets us enjoy the food more.

Stress can compromise digestion so avoid all stress while you are eating. This includes not rushing through your meal, avoid confrontations, do not partake in serious discussions at the dinner table, and relax if you are stressed out before you sit down to the table. Set a relaxed mood with music or candles and create a soothing atmosphere in which to eat such as a pretty tablecloth, nice dinnerware, and colorful serving dishes.

Healthy eating also means that you stop eating when you are full. Eat slowly so that you can pay better attention to the signals that your body is giving you regarding when it is full. If you eat only enough food to satisfy your hunger and no more, you are more likely to get to or maintain the proper weight.

Eating more food earlier in the day gives your body more time to digest it, so your biggest meal should be at the start of your day, a modest meal at noon and a smaller sized meal at night. Eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day is actually good for your metabolism.

You can also eat healthier by eating a well-balanced diet. Each day your meals should center on the six basic food groups - whole grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and other dairy, protein and oils.

You need all six of these food groups for optimum health. Your body receives nutrients such as vitamins and minerals from all six food groups - if you ignore one of the groups you will not be getting the nutrients from that group in your diet and therefore you will not be as healthy as you could be.

How do I become more healthy eating wise?

I am young and want to become more healthy, I have tried to eat less junk food and more healthy food but it never works. What can I do to eat healthier?

Eat more fruit and veggies. Also eat whole grain instead of white bread. Do not eat any more fried greasy crap. Eat more grilled white meats. Like grilled chicken or grilled fish. They have alot of protein and you don't eat the grease that you would get if they were fried. Cut out the sweets and the deserts. Whatever you buy by the low-fat or the organic kind. Once you get in the habbit of it, it becomes a lifestyle change. I am happy to hear abou a young person like me trying to be heathy. I am soooo proud of you! Don't give up! Keep with it!

any good tips for getting into a healthy eating routine?

im not happy with my body and i would really like to eat healthier, but i find it really hard to maintain what i eat.
i can eat healthy foods for a little while, but then i find myself wolfing down junk food before i really realise im doing it.

if anyone has any tips or stories of what they've done to maintain healthy eating please let me know!

thank you!

First, get smaller plates. Most dinner plates these days are huge.

Next, plate your food as follows, 1/2 the plate vegetables, 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbohydrates. Fruit on the side or for snack.

Eat less, and more often. Instead of three big meals, three small meals with three snacks in between.

Shop in the outer sections of the supermarket. That's where the healthy foods are. The junk is in the middle.

Read the labels.

Go for items with higher dietary fiber. If you eat pasta, get whole wheat pasta. It has more fiber, plus I think it tastes better.

Fats: You need them to process vegetables, so don't cut them out. Besides they help make many things taste better. Just cut way back. Also check and make sure the are unsaturated fats. That will help your cholesterol levels. The fats you want are usually the ones that are liquid at room temperature, but completely avoid trans fats. Trans fats are near liquid, but they are saturated fats and are REALLY bad for you.

DO NOT CUT OUT SWEETS. By trying to cut them completely, you end up binging on them, then regretting it later.

When you eat carbs, have some protein with them. That keeps your blood sugar levels even. Even if your not diabetic, your blood sugar levels can still fluctuate and cause problems.

Condiments such as mayonnaise and butter. Do not use the light or low-fat varieties. Just learn to use less. That way, if you go out and the light variety is not available, you're used to to it and don't go overboard.

If you do binge, do not get discouraged and go back to old habits. Say "oh well, tomorrow's a new day," and get back on that horse.

Realize that this is a life change, not a diet. Diets don't work.

How can I start eating healthy and sticking with it?

I always tell myself I should go on a diet and eat healthy. Like, no more soda and candy. But I never stick with it.
I also need to drink more water and vitamin K and iron.
How do I get these into my diet?

I have dark circles under my eyes and maybe drinking more water and reducing my computer time will help?

Don't buy anymore fattening foods around your house.

Do you find eating healthy expensive?

Yes, that's why lots of poor people are obese and diabetic. Fast food is cheap. Junk food is cheap. It used to be the other way around; rich people were fat, and poor people were thin.
